Some Interesting Documents

  • The WWI Clive Johns Letter from Bude This interesting letter provides a wealth of information about the Johns family of Bude, Cornwall during the first world war. It was written home by Clive Johns (then in the New Zealand army) when he visited relatives while stationed in England during the war. Clive Johns went on to become mayor of Mount Eden, New Zealand after the war. You'll need Adobe Acrobat Reader to read this file, which you probably have - if not, you can download it HERE.

  • The 1841 West Putford Census This census shows the Johns and Walter familes, along with related familes Bond and Vanstone, etc. Some familiar addresses from West Putford are there, including Voulhouse (Volehouse) and Church Town (also known as Churston Manor).

  • Description of Sutcombe in 1850 This 1850 description of Sutcombe (home to many people in this genealogy) names the Lord of the Manor of Sutcombe as Richard Walter, who held this title as owner of Churston Manor, in West Putford. Richard Walter (1781-1865) was my GGGG-Grandfather, and he lived at Churston Manor from at least 1815.
